Monticchiello - Fraction of Pienza (SI) - Val d'Orcia - UNESCO World Heritage - Tuscany

Monticchiello is a small stone jewel that lies harmoniously on the famous hills of the Sienese countryside. Your visit to the village can start from the only door that allows entry and exit. The town is magical and full of romantic and suggestive views. When you stroll through its narrow streets and alleys, it fills you with beautiful sensations.

Monticchiello is fascinating, but to make the visit fun, I suggest you look for a bas-relief from 1397 on the wall of a house depicting the Traitor's Head oppressed by the cannonball.

A castellan betrayed the town for two thousand florins, opening its doors to Florentine enemies. The Head wanted to warn the unfaithful citizen about the fate he would end up with if he returned to the country. It is located 5m high, so to find it I suggest you look up while walking.

One of the curiosities of the village is also the human head carved in stone on the external wall of a building, in Via San Luigi, with the inscription "O BECERO FAI LA SPIA SI."

At the end of the 1800s, the house owner accused the neighbor of spying on the authority, creating problems for him. He sculpted her face so that he saw it daily and felt laughed at.

The characteristic of the village is the Poor Theater, which traditionally puts on a show every year in August in the small town square.

The theme of the shows concern peasant culture and its profound values, and every year important food for thought on life and current events is provided.

During your walk, I recommend that you admire the Torre del Cassero and visit the Church of Saints Leonardo and Cristoforo.
